The Brody Company operates over 50 Great Canadian Dollar Store franchises in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Judy Driscoll, the company’s human resources manager, is responsible for payroll at each location.
The Brody Company has been steadily adding Great Canadian Dollar Store locations to its roster for years, meaning more employees and more payroll payments.
By 2014, Judy Driscoll was spending half a day on printing cheques, getting them signed, stuffing them in envelopes and taking them to the post office to be mailed to each store.
“I could only start the payroll on a Monday morning,” she says, “and the expectations was that the employees would hopefully receive their paycheques by Thursday, so I was always under the gun. From my perspective, it was time sensitive, laborious and costly.”
After installing Telpay’s direct deposit system on the company’s computers, a communication bulletin was sent out to each
employee requesting their bank account information.
A month later, Judy had what she needed and started paying them electronically.
What a difference it made. Payroll took a fraction of those Monday mornings, now, employees received their pay faster, and costs
were slashed because there was no printing, stuffing envelopes, travelling or express posting.
